Sculptural Work
This page documents the build process of 2 video projection mapped face sculptures which I along with the help of 2 others designed, built, 3D animated and video projection mapped as part of 2 visual shows for music festivals.
An early design concept sketch with the 3d face already included
A further developed small scale prototype that combines 3D printing and multiple layers of lasercut wood
Another early 3D prototype used for determining how much of the face should be used so that the projections did not become distorted if projected from too steep of an angle
An early test projection on the minature scale model ensuring everything worked well
I used software in which I was able to import the 3D mesh to create a series of interlocking pieces of wood that were laser cut before being slotted together, this was a small scale prototype
On the full size version I used chickenwire to bridge the gaps between the wood
A layer of paper mache was the built up over the chicken wire
I then projection mapped a wireframe image of the digital model onto the physical sculpture to test for discrpencies
I then made a digital capture using Photogrammetry of the physical sculpture to allow it to be more closely compared to the digital version being used for animation
The photogrammetry capture was then imported into the modelling software so as to closely compare the two and eventually make some small adjustments to the digital version that was being used for animation
A side view comapring the physical sculture and original digital model used for animation
Eventually I realsed that i could seperate the face into different sections based upon the detail allowing for more pieces of wood to be used for areas with finer detail
Here I was able to create just the areas with higher detail made from more pieces of wood
A layer of hessian and then a mix of clay and paper mache were used for creating these features
They were then inserted into the larger simple face allowing for those fine details to be worked on seperately using a higher density of interlocking wood pieces
Another view of the face after some more layers and sanding
After some paint has been added
